To Love & To Lead: Staff Discussions

One of my favorite stories of caring is the starfish story. A young girl was walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up, and throw it back into the ocean. People watched her with amusement.
She had been doing this for some time when a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!”
The girl seemed crushed, suddenly deflated. But after a few moments, she bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!”
The old man looked at the girl inquisitively and thought about what she had done and said. Inspired, he joined the little girl in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved.
I know at times we feel overwhelmed by all the activities in our lives’. We become so focused on our own issues, we may miss an opportunity to reach out to others in need of help.
The Van Buren Pastors Fellowship is planning a community outreach event, Saturday, April 22 called ONE SERVE. This event will be a great opportunity to serve our community. Not only to serve, but to come together as the body of believers to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Psalms 133, 1: How good and pleasant it is when God's people live (and work) together in unity!
We are asking our whole congregation to participate in some way. There are many projects for which you can volunteer, or your Sunday School or small group may want to sponsor its own outreach project. As an example, your group could: clean up a school playground; rake leaves in a yard; clean gutters on someone’s house. We also have several projects arranged that don’t need you to plan, just make yourself available Saturday morning.
Please contact Pam James at the church office at 479-474-6424. Provide her with information about your group’s project, your ideas for a project or your availability to help on this Saturday.
We will be meeting on the Van Buren High School parking lot, Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 8:00 AM for a time of fellowship and food. After a brief commissioning service, we will disperse to serve our community and show the love of Jesus! Most projects should be completed by noon.
Let’s see how many starfish we can throw back into the sea of God’s amazing love!
