From the Heart of Your Welcome Minister

Some of you have been asking me about our Greeters schedule.  You are wondering when it will be emailed out or you are making sure you are scheduled for a certain month, etc.  Many are surprised when I say, “We no longer have greeters”.  Well…..let me tell you a little story.

This past Fall, God started speaking to me about our hospitality at Heritage.  He showed me how good it was, how welcoming it was, and how much we have grown as a congregation in that area over the past five years.  I was very pleased with that until the next thing I heard was,   “Becki it is really good but my people deserve great”.  I was caught off guard, and I immediately went to the negative.  I started having doubts about my leadership ability, and what I was capable of doing.  As I started praying and asking for direction, God began to reveal a new plan.  I knew that I was not capable of doing anything in my own flesh but if I asked Him and relied on Him the result could be amazing.  The first thing that He revealed was that we needed to move away from the term greeters and start using the term hospitality.  This was given to me in 1 Peter 4: 9-11

“Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.  If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God.  If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength that God provides.”

The next thing that was revealed was that we needed to start working in teams and that our hospitality teams needed to take this on as a ministry.  We needed to look like a team, function like a team, and be committed as a team.  So I prayed about what that might look like and who might be a part of this team.  God blessed me abundantly with some wonderful names of people.  Some said yes and some said no.  However, the ones who said yes are committed to this ministry.  I walked in to our first meeting and I was overwhelmed with what ministry looks like when everyone in the room shares the same heart for people.  It was beautiful.  I have begun to ask our Father to expand this ministry and to reveal to me others with this heart.

Therefore, when you walk in the doors of Heritage, or maybe out in the parking lot, or in the Welcome Center you will not see greeters.  You will see people whose heart is hospitality.  They all have matching sweaters or vest so that they are identifiable and they are committed to be standing at that post every week.  They decided that being there every week was essential to them getting to know who our guest are and who has been here for a while. They are ready to pray and love on people at a moments notice. I love their hearts and enthusiasm.  For those of you who are not standing at the front door anymore and receiving our guest, this does not let you off the hook.  It just changes your location.  You are now free to offer warmth and love in our Fellowship Hall, the Sanctuary, Great Hall, etc.  Your opportunities are limitless.

Keep up the good work!  Catch the vision!  We are moving from good to great in 2017
